Saving money on your energy bill doesn't have to be expensive, and there are plenty of high-impact, low-cost methods to reduce your energy consumption and save money. As a result, we have found 10 practical tips to make a difference in both your wallet and the environment. From simple habits to minor home improvements, we've got you covered.
1. Energy Audit : First and foremost, conduct an energy audit to identify energy inefficiencies in your home. This can help you prioritize improvements that offer the most significant energy savings, and can be done yourself or by a professional. If you would prefer to take the DIY route, check out this checklist from the U.S. Department of Energy.
2. Energy-Efficient Lighting : Replace traditional incandescent bulbs with energy-efficient LED bulbs. LEDs consume less electricity and last much longer, making them a cost-effective choice.
3. Unplug Electronics : Many electronics and appliances continue to draw power even when turned off. Unplugging devices like chargers, laptops, and gaming consoles when not in use can prevent this, or try using power strips to easily switch off multiple devices at once. If using power strips, consider investing in smart power strips that automatically turn off power to devices in standby mode or when not in use.
4. Weatherproofing : Check for, and, seal any gaps and cracks around your home's doors and windows with weatherstripping and caulk. This prevents drafts and keeps your home better insulated, reducing the need for heating or cooling.
5. Use Fans Correctly : Ceiling fans can help distribute air effectively, allowing you to set your thermostat a few degrees higher in summer and lower in winter. Most fans also have two modes for winter and summer cooling and a switch to control the fan blade direction. Make sure your fan is on “summer mode” by checking that the blades are spinning counterclockwise to help create a downdraft, which creates that direct, cooling breeze. During the winter, flip the switch so that the blades spin clockwise instead to create an updraft and circulate warm air around the room.
6. Avoid the Dryer : Avoid using the dryer whenever possible, and hang your clothes to dry instead. This will not only save energy on your electric bill but will also keep your home cooler to help your HVAC system and also extend the life of your clothes!
7. Properly maintain HVAC systems : Regularly clean and replace air filters in your heating and cooling systems to ensure they operate efficiently. Additionally, if you have a forced-air HVAC system, have the ductwork inspected for leaks and seal any gaps to improve efficiency.
Bonus: Install a programmable thermostat to adjust your home's temperature automatically based on your schedule. During the summer, raise the temperature during times you’re not home, and lower the temperature in the winter months.
8. Close the Blinds : If the weather is particularly hot try keeping your blinds and curtains closed during the hottest parts of the day to keep the cool air in and prevent the sun from warming up your space. If you still want to enjoy some natural lighting, open the blinds on a window that is not receiving direct sunlight to brighten up the space, or consider investing in energy-efficient curtains.
9. Insulate Your Water Heater : Insulating your water heater and hot water pipes can help retain heat, reducing energy consumption. This also prevents the air around your heater and pipes from heating up as well, keeping your home cooler.
10. Adjust Refrigerator Settings : One easy way to reduce your energy consumption is to keep your refrigerator and freezer at the right temperature, usually around 37°F and 0°F respectively. Double-check your seals as well to ensure they’re tight to prevent cold air from escaping.
By implementing these energy-saving strategies, you can lower your energy bill and ultimately save both money and energy. In need of recommendations for some of these items? Reach out to your Helen Adams Realty agent today for a list of trusted, local vendors!
